Foundation of The Princess Mother’s Charities Fund of Thailand

Under the Royal Patronage of HRH Princess Somdet Phra Srinakarindra Boromarajajonani

The Princess Mother’s Charities Fund of Thailand was registered as a foundation with the Ministry of Interior on October 14, 1980.

The idea of creating the foundation was initiated by Thanpuying Betty Dumaine, a close friend of HRH Princess Somdet Phra Srinakarindra Boromarajajonanai, beloved mother of the late King Rama IX.

Initial funding for the foundation of Bht 3.4 million came from money donated to the Princess Mother, Bht 100,000 from Dr.Thanat Khoman, and 300,000 from Thanpuying Betty Dumaine’s foundation in the United States.

It was important for Thanphuying Betty to support the Princess Mother in her royal projects and to make them sustainable. The initial funding came from her own pocket and from friends and colleagues living in Thailand and in the United States.

The Foundation was accepted “under the Royal Patronage of HRH Princess Somdet Phra Srinakarindra Boromarajajonani”. Project work began with the construction and renovation of several border patrol police schools, assistance to organizations supporting the handicapped and those suffering from leprosy, and support to improve the lives of border patrol police communities.

Over 4,500 Nurse Scholarships since 1990

In 1990, the Foundation established a scholarship fund for nursing students, “The Princess Mother’s 90th Birthday Anniversary Fund”, to commemorate HRH Princess Somdet Phra Srinakarindra Boromrajajonani’s turning 90 years of age and to recognize her contribution to the fields of medicine and nursing in Thailand. This fund provided additional support to students working towards degrees in nursing from 30 institutions under Prince Mahidol’s Medical institute and other government-supported nursing schools throughout the country. Since its launch, over 4,500 Scholarships have been awarded to nursing students from year 1 thru year 4. The scholarships are given out in October of each year to coincide with the “Thai Nurse’s Day” and in remembrance of the Princess Mother’s birth month. More than 900 students have since graduated and are in the workforce across the country.

After the death of HRH Princess Somdet Phra Srinakarindra Boromarajajonani in 1995, her daughter, HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana, became Honorary President of the Foundation until her passing away in 2008.
